They come to Emily Griffith, as students have come since 1916, because they want to learn.
 
They come because, like Rodrigo who found work as a busboy, they know they need skills to lead successful lives. They come, like single-mother Ishe who is raising four young children far from war-torn Somalia where she was born...

Small Key, Big Door
 
“Quiet, please. Testing is in progress.”
 
Each day, adult learners thronging the wide halls of the Emily Griffith Opportunity School at 1250 Welton Street quiet down as they walk past this sign on the door of Room 201. Each year, hundreds of them enter Room 201. They come to take the “GED,” the test of “general educational development” that offers an alternate credential for students in the United States and Canada who have not graduated from high school.
 
One of these adults is “John”...
